The American Carousel Organ: An Illustrated Encyclopedia is a hard-bound book constructed of slick paper. There are 283 pages containing over 450 illustrations (many in color) as well as 20 tables and a CD insterted in the back of the book, all of which illustrate the colorful history of the production band and carousel organs made from the turn-of-the-century through the 1930s.

Why write a book on American Carousel Organs? The carousel band organ is a fascinating blend of inventiveness, mechanical wizardry, thoughtful musical interpretation and a joy to listen to. The effect of an organ that is in perfect condition and playing well?arranged music is nothing short of superb! Enough to make "a bad hair day" the best day of your life!
Until recently, however, the current generation of carousel and band organ enthusiasts has been denied this pleasure. Band organs certainly played well when new at the turn of the century and for a few decades thereafter, but with time (and wear-and-tear on the organ, exposure to the elements and neglect) most organs sounded bad and listeners would turn away from such poor music. With the resurgence of the carousel both as entertainment and art form has also come the more complete restoration of existing band organs as well as the building of new organs.
